Kerala shopping fest from tomorrow

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov. 29 The Grand Kerala Shopping Festival, which is to begin on Saturday, is expected to give a boost to the State’s tourism and retailing sectors.

The event will promote the ‘Made in Kerala’ brand and is expected to expand the market for traditional industries such as coir, handloom, handicrafts and spices, and also for manufactured products.

The 45-day shopping festival will cover all 14 districts in Kerala and will offer shoppers attractive discounts and lucky draws, with prizes totalling Rs 10 crore.

Prizes on offer include cars, consumer durables and holiday packages.

According to Mr T. Balakrishnan, Principal Secretary-Industries, Government of Kerala and Dr V.Venu, Secretary-Tourism, Government of Kerala, the shopping festival coincides with the tourism season and the Christmas and New Year festivities.

Over the next five years, the shopping festival is expected to emerge as a major international event, while simultaneously giving a boost to the State’s economy, he said.

For retailers, the event is expected to help drive sales and also help individual outlets establish a presence and identity in the market.

Special cultural and entertainment programmes will be organised as part of the shopping festival.
