Madurai, Nov. 30 Retail major Reliance Retail Ltd launched four stores of ‘Reliance Fresh’ in Madurai on Friday.

The stores are set up in KK Nagar, Satyasai Nagar, AA Road and Anna Nagar. While ten more stores have been planned, two of them will be coming in up December at Doak Nagar and near Padma Theatre, according to Mr N. Ramesh, Vice-President, State Head-Fresh.

Growing numbers

With the present launch, the tally of stores in Tamil Nadu rises to 51 and overall, 390 across the country, Mr B. Venkataramana, Senior Vice-President, Human Resources, told Business Line at the function to mark the occasion held at Satyasai Nagar, inaugurated by Ms Kandhi Alagiri.

Speaking further, he said that with the launch, the company becomes the single largest organised retailer in the State, commanding an area of 1,80,000 sq. ft with the size of each store varying from 2,000 sq. ft to 5,000 sq. ft.

Good response

The commencement of operations recently in Coimbatore and Salem has earned good response and similar outlets will be opened in major towns across the State soon.

Each store is manned by around 30 trained sales associates and they are covered with statutory benefits.

Apart from them, in Madurai, in the front-end currently 200 are employed and indirectly 500 more are employed, he added.

Asked about the opposition in Uttar Pradesh, Mr M. Balachandran I.P.S.(Retd), Chief Mentor, Reliance Retail, said that the stores have started functioning, less the fruits and vegetables.

While there was opposition initially in Tamil Nadu too, the conditions have changed and the atmosphere is congenial and people welcome the presence, he added.

Asked about the purchase policy, he said that in every area where the stores are started, nearly 30-35 per cent of vegetables and fruits and few more items such as rice are procured from the surrounding areas.

He added that speciality stores of mall type are in the offing.
