Dairy & Dairy Products Rs 17,300 cr outlay for National Dairy Plan Our Bureau Ahmedabad, Nov. 30To meet the rapidly growing demand of milk and its products in India, the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) has prepared a National Dairy Plan (NDP) with a total outlay of Rs 17,300 crore, expected to be funded through a consortium. The Annual Report of NDDB for 2006-07 said India, the largest milk producer in the world with a production of about 100 million tonnes (mt) per annum, needs to nearly double it to 180 mt by 2021-22. The NDP, seeking to meet this challenge, is investing Rs 3,700 crore during the 11th Plan period. These investments will focus on productivity measures to enhance milk production at the pace required and strengthen and expand the infrastructure (village-level testing, chilling, and processing plants) to procure, process and market milk through existing and new institutional structures. This was necessary in view of the needs dictated by economic logic, scale, and focus to remain competitive. Marketable surplusBy 2021-22, it is expected that the organised dairy sector (both cooperative and private) will increase its share of the marketable surplus from 30 per cent today to around 65 per cent, thereby ensuring quality milk supply to consumers, NDDB said in a statement here. With regard to the performance of cooperatives, the report said that they procured 7.9 mt of milk, registering a growth of 1.1 per cent over the previous year. During the year, producer prices for milk increased substantially, leading to a rise in consumer prices. The year also witnessed a hike in the international prices of skimmed milk powder that was unprecedented in the history of international trade. More Stories on : Dairy & Dairy Products
