It was a jubilant moment for the tea trade here, when the CTC dust rate touched an all-time high of Rs 91 a kg.

Trade sources had just not expected such high rates for the UPASI Super Red Dust (SRD) CTC dust grade in recent years.

Speaking on conditions of anonymity, an industry insider said UPASI had put the valuation at Rs 78 a kg, but the price at which it was being quoted took the seller — Contemporary Tea Services, by surprise.

The buyer picked 160 kg of UPASI SRD.

Close on the heels of the SRD CTC dust tea, was another lot comprising SRD 1, which fetched Rs 89 on Friday.

UPASI has been selling teas for the last three to four years, but the rates have always hovered around Rs 50 a kg.
