Piracy Tackling piracy off Somalia
International Maritime Organisation (IMO), the UN body, passed a resolution recently asking the Somalian Government to allow foreign warships and aircraft to chase pirates in its territorial waters. The hijacking of vessels and demands for the payment of ransoms for their release and for the release of crew and cargo have become very common in the wake of continuing strife in Somalia, so much so that even ships carrying food aid under UN’s World Food Programme are no t spared. The IMO resolution has asked the Somalia Government to act to stop piracy immediately and to ensure that ships seized by pirates are released immediately. It has also urged the governments of its member countries to issue instructions to their own shipping fleet as to how to protect ships in the event of attack off Somalia and what to do when attacked or under threat.
