Ranbaxy award for CCMB scientist

Hyderabad, Dec. 2

Dr. Amitabha Chattopadhyay, Deputy Director, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), here has been selected for the prestigious Ranbaxy Research Award in basic research in Medical Sciences. The award for 2006 recognises his pioneering contribution on the role of membrane lipids in the organisation and function of G-protein coupled receptors, and its implications in health and disease. Interestingly, Dr. Chattopadhyay’s group was the first to show that host membrane cholesterol plays an important role in the process of infection caused by the parasite Leishmania donovani, which results in leishmaniasis.
