Our Bureau

Bangalore, Dec. 3 Dynamatic Technologies Ltd has signed an MoU for a significant deal with Airbus supplier Spirit AeroSystems (Europe) Ltd, by which it will make wing structures and assemblies for the A320 class aircraft.

Manufacturing will begin in the third quarter of 2008 at the Dynamatic facility in Bangalore with full production rates being targeted for 2010. In 20 months, the NSE-listed Dynamatic will become the single source strategic partner for these components, according to Mr Udayant Malhoutra, CEO and Managing Director of Dynamatic.

The deal of undisclosed value will take the Rs 110-crore Dynamatic into the Airbus supply chain, making it the only other Indian company after HAL to do so, Mr Malhoutra said.

Its expanded facility has been just opened; it will put 440 of its 2,000 employees on the job to make the sets at the rate of 40 a month by mid-2010, he told Business Line.

The MoU covers a significant complex metallic precision assembly for Airbus single aisle (A320 family) aircraft.

The assembly by Dynamatic marks a major step towards further development of partnership between the two, Dynamatic said.

“This, on top of our prior learning from Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, is a major win for the Indian aerospace industry,” he said.

Spirit AeroSystems (Europe) is the European division of Spirit AeroSystems Inc, the world’s largest supplier of commercial airplane assemblies and components. Spirit makes fuselages, under-wing components, composites, wings, spares and repairs; it was formed in 2005 when Boeing Commercial Airplanes sold this business to Onex Corporation.

‘Milestone agreement’

Mr David Stewart, Commercial and Procurement Director, Spirit Europe, said, “India is a logical place for us to develop a supply chain that meets our customers’ strategic intent. We have been working closely with Airbus (UK) to successfully secure approvals for production at Dynamatic. This agreement is a key milestone for us.”

Mr Mel Hughes, Key Account Manager of Airbus, said, “We are collaborating with [Spirit] to develop a seamless industrial transfer process for the benefit of both our companies.”

Dr Srinivisan Dwarakanath – Airbus Country Manager and Director, International Cooperation, “India is a strategic country for Airbus. Such partnerships will contribute to satisfy our offset obligations in India.”
