Mumbai, Dec 4

Global power equipment manufacturer Siemens Ltd’s new power transformer factory at Kalwa near Mumbai aims to reach markets in West Asia and SAARC countries.

Mr J. Schubert, Managing Director of Siemens Ltd, said that in view of the opportunities in India and overseas market, the company is first planning to stabilise and then ramp up the transformer production.

He was talking to reporters after the factory was formally inaugurated on Tuesday.

“It has enhanced our portfolio in the power segment making us capable of offering full spectrum of products in the transmission and distribution segment,” Mr Schubert said.

The new factory built at a cost of Rs 200 core will be able to address the heightened demand for power transmission equipment in the country by designing and manufacturing large transformers up to 600 mVa and 800 kV voltage class. It will also produce special transformers for HVDC system. Initially, it would have a capacity of manufacturing transformers totalling 15,000 mVa per year.

The factory, spread over an area of 40,000 square meters will provide direct employment to about 500 people and indirect jobs to about 1,000 people, when it will use its full capacity.

This is the eighth factory of the company in Maharashtra and the fifth belonging to its power business. This unit is the latest addition to the 17 transformer factories of Siemens located worldwide.
