Foreign Trade States - West Bengal British envoy to meet Buddhadeb today
Our Bureau Kolkata, Dec. 4 The new British High Commissioner to India, Mr Richard Stagg, is making his first official visit to Kolkata on December 5 and 6. During his visit he will hold discussions with the State Governor, Mr Gopal Krishna Gandhi, and senior Government officials. Mr Stagg will call on the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, on Wednesday to discuss steps to strengthen business, cultural and development co-operation between the UK and Bengal. Commenting on his visit, Mr Stagg said he was looking forward to visiting Bengal where the UK has historic and growing ties. ‘We believe that India’s international role will go from strength to strength. Britain has long supported India’s candidature for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. We want to work with India to address some of the major challenges we face, whether in Afghanistan or Burma, based on our shared commitment to democracy and human rights. In addition, India and the UK both have direct experience of terrorism and we will continue to promote closer international cooperation in the struggle to defeat this scourge,’ he said. During his visit Mr Stagg will also visit a Department for International Development (DFID)-supported project in the Khardha Puranibazar slum in Titagarh at 4.30 p.m. on Thursday to see for himself firsthand the department’s work in the State.
