Letters Pending cases As per Press reports, there are almost three crore cases pending in Indian courts. Also, as per recent reports, the 10 oldest cases, pending in the lower courts of Delhi, are from 1960 to 1968. It is time some time limit was fixed for courts to decide the cases as delayed justice is no justice. There is a law of limitation for most acts in day-to-day life; why not for courts to decide the cases? If parties do not appear for more than three continuous dates, cases should be decided ex-parte and not more than three adjournments be allowed for any case. This procedure can definitely be applied and made a rule, at least for civil cases. In criminal cases too, some sort of time limit for all procedures must be laid down under the appropriate Acts/ Rules. Mahesh Kapasi e-mail
