AP, TN sign pact to end fishing row

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, Dec. 5 In a bid to end confrontation among fishermen in the border areas, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have entered into a formal agreement that seeks to clearly demarcate areas of operation and restrict fishermen to their respective areas.

Representatives from the fishermen communities, Ministers holding the Fisheries portfolio and senior officials met here on Wednesday to find a solution to the knotty issue.

Fishermen from both sides have been alleging that the others are cutting into one another’s catch.

The Hyderabad resolution comprised five key elements that sought to end mechanised fishing up to 8 km from the shore. From there to the 20.6-km mark (where the territorial limit ends, the fishermen from one State could venture into the other’s area only with a due licence from that particular State Government).

Pulicat Lake

Addressing a press conference here after the discussion, Mr Mandali Buddha Prasad and Mr K.P.P. Samy, Ministers for Fisheries from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu respectively, said the meeting had also resolved to end the row with regard to fishing in Pulicat Lake on the border.

Contentious issue

The lake, which is spread 400 sq km in Andhra Pradesh and 60 sq km in Tamil Nadu, remained a contentious issue. The fishermen from the former Andhra Pradesh alleged that their peers from neighbouring State were exploiting the catch more, despite the fact that they had a lesser share in the lake.
