Power cut: Plea for VAT refund

Madurai, Dec. 5

The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce & Industry, upset at the frequent power cuts in the State, has appealed for refund of value added tax (VAT) paid on diesel used by industrial units. The chamber President, Mr S. Rethinavelu, in a statement here said that frequent power cuts are severely impacting trade and industry in the State and together with the general public, they suffer due to lack of transparency in the timings and duration of power cuts. Due to the unannounce d power sheddings, industrial units are unable to plan their production schedule, resulting in heavy wastages and maintenance of quality of products. The new industrial units in rural areas have been subjected to severe inconveniences and loss and are driven to closing the units. When the State is unable to produce the required quantity of power, it should properly schedule the timings and execute them with prior announcements without making any differentiation between rural and urban areas, he said. —
