Infrastructure SEZs: Board of Approval meeting postponed K.R. Srivats New Delhi, Dec. 6 The meeting of the Board of Approval on Special Economic Zones (SEZs) has once again been postponed. Official sources said that the meeting would now be held on January 2 and not on December 12 as planned earlier. The BoA was to meet on November 29 to consider 36 proposals including those by steel-maker SAIL, real estate company DLF and Dr Reddy’s Laboratories. But this meeting had to be postponed (to December 12) on account of the India-EU summit. The Government has so far given formal approvals for 404 SEZs spanning 19 States and three Union Territories. Another 160 applications are before the Government. As many as 172 SEZs have been notified so far by the Government. Exports from SEZsIn the fiscal 2007-08, the Government expects exports from the SEZs to touch Rs 67,000 crore as against exports of Rs 34,700 crore recorded in 2006-07. Besides the buoyancy in economic growth, the number of functional SEZs is expected to go up during the current fiscal, leading to a surge in exports. The BOA only considers those proposals that have been duly recommended by the State Governments. Moreover, the State Governments have been informed, on June 15 this year following decisions of the EGOM, that the Board of Approval would not approve any SEZs where the State Governments have carried out or propose to carry out compulsory acquisition of land for such SEZs after April 5 this year.
