New Delhi, Dec. 6 Export of chillies during the current financial year is expected to touch 2,00,000 tonnes as against the Centre’s target of 1,35,000 tonnes, according to a survey by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham).

The industry body has said the increase in exports was due to increasing demand from countries such as Malaysia, Sri Lanka, the US and Bangladesh.

“The estimates are made as per feedback received by the chamber from various chilli producers which are its members,” Assocham said in a release.

The release added that during the 2006-07 financial year, chilli exports were pegged at 1,48,500 tonnes, but the Spices Board had estimated that during the current fiscal because of the stagnation in the domestic production the exports would dip.

But this was not to be, as during the first seven months of the current financial, chilli exports had already touched 1,20,000 tonnes.

GROWING DEMAND

“The demand for Indian chillies in Malaysia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the US has been growing on an average 20 to 25 per cent because of its quality and price competitiveness.

Malaysia is the largest buyer of Indian chilli followed by Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the US.

The export of chilly accounts for 48 per cent in terms of quantity and 28 per cent in terms of value of the total export of spices from the country,” the release said.
