Shipping Industry & Economy - Climate & Weather 4 vessels shifted at Chennai port due to bad weather Our Bureau Chennai, Dec. 7 Four container vessels were shifted to outer anchorage at the Chennai port following heavy ‘ranging’ due to bad weather. However, operations were normal with Maersk Douala, a large container ship. From December 5 night vessels berthed at CTB-1, 2 and 3 experienced severe ranging rendering cargo operations at the Chennai Container Terminal (CCT) unsafe. To avoid damage to both vessels and terminal infrastructure it was decided in a meeting between the terminal officials and steamer agents and vessel operators to shift the four vessels (Yong Wang, Kota Wirawan, Hunsa Bhum and Gallant Wave) berthed to outer anchorage and resume operations when weather conditions and swell abate, according to a CCT press release. Meanwhile, CCT will concentrate on clearing up the import yard and receiving export containers for vessels ‘whose gates are open.’ The recent trailer strike, which affected operations at CCT, was called off on November 30 evening, and since then CCT delivered 11,907 TEUs (twenty foot equivalent units) of import containers and received 9,075 TEUs of export containers until Friday morning. Vessel operations resumed on December 1 night and CCT has so far handled 12,036 TEUs. The yard inventory as of this morning was import – 3,092 TEUs and export – 6,095 TEUs, says the press release.
