MRPL conducts emergency response exercise

Our Bureau

Mangalore, Dec. 7 An onsite emergency response exercise was conducted at the isomerisation unit of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) here on Friday.

The intention of organising this exercise was to see the preparedness of the company in case of any emergency like fire and the safety measures they are going to take in such a situation. Another intention to choose the isomerisation unit was to check the preparedness of the staff working in that unit.

Isomerisation unit was commissioned on December 30, 2006. The mock drill began at 11.10 a.m. with a leak of hydrogen sulphide and the subsequent fire associated with it. All the mock drill operations, including fire extinguishing and evacuation of the casualty were carried out smoothly. Fire fighters and ambulances from MRPL were put into service at the mock drill.

The mock emergency response operation came to an end at 11.40 a.m. A team of external observers, who oversaw the operation at the unit, analysed the situation and suggested ways to overcome the shortfalls.
