‘Mismatch’ in education and industry needs

G. Moorthy

Convention call: Mr Rajeev Ranjan, TN Industries Commissioner and Director of Industries and Commerce, addressing a convention in Madurai on Friday. —

Our Correspondent

Madurai, Dec. 7 The educational system is not able to quickly relate the change in industry and there is a mismatch resulting in a huge skill shortage in the country, observed Mr Rajeev Ranjan, Tamil Nadu Industries Commissioner and Director of Industries and Commerce, here on Friday.

He was delivering the inaugural address at the two-day state-level convention on ‘Industrial collaborators and community colleges of Tamilnadu’ organised by the Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (Maditssia), the Tamilnadu Small and tiny Industries Association (Tanstia) and the Indian Centre For Research and Development of Community Education (ICRDCE).

Industry inputs

He said there was need for inputs from the industry in raising the skills required. While the big companies in the IT sector have their own training institutes that involve high-end activities, vast majority at the bottom are left out. Despite good infrastructure in engineering education in the State, all of them are not able to find employment after the completion of the courses as they lacked in specific skills.

The Union Government has come up with an initial allocation of Rs 550 crore on skill development programme. The new industrial policy of the State announced recently has recognised the need and set a task force on HR skill initiative to impart training for quality improvement.

The Government alone cannot cope with the problem and there is need for a collaborative effort involving others, especially in the promotion of soft skills at all levels including the schools, Mr Ranjan added.
