Accidents Power failure caused gas leak at Chemplast unit Our Bureau Chennai, Dec. 7 A power failure caused a ‘minor’ leakage of chorine inside the caustic soda plant of Chemplast Sanmar Ltd in Mettur, Tamil Nadu, according to a company press release. The leakage was minimal and was not harmful, and no casualty reported inside the plant. This morning, due to a problem in the power distribution system in the plant, the power supply to the auxillary units of the ‘Cell House’ was interrupted. Immediately, the main electrolysers also went off line automatically, thus bringing the production of caustic soda/chlorine to an immediate halt. The plant is designed for evacuation and netrualisation of chlorine left in the system. The system came on line immediately, followed by resumption of automatic emergency supply within 20 seconds. But, this emergency system also failed at 1100 hours. Immediately an alternate emergency power was lined up. During the interim period, there was a minor leakage of chlorine inside the plant into the atmosphere. This was immediately reported to various authorities, including the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, inspector of factories, Salem, local police and revenue authorities, says the release.
