Cement workers demand share in profits; threaten stir

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Dec. 8 Cement industry workers have demanded Rs 1,000 ad hoc increase in their monthly salaries in view of the surge in profits of the manufacturers, failing which they have threatened to go on a one-day nationwide strike on January 24.

The decision was taken at the National Convention of Cement Workers Federations and other unions held here on Saturday.

The last bipartite wage settlement for cement sector workers was reached in 2005 and is applicable till 2010. Since the next bipartite settlement is due only in 2010, the workers have asked for an ad hoc increase, trade union leaders said.

The General Secretary of the Indian National Cement Workers Federation, Mr N. Nanjappan, and the President of the All-India Cement Workers Federation, Mr H. Mahadevan, told Business Line: “The last wage settlement was reached in 1995 when the sector was not doing that well. But situations have changed since then and since the next settlement is due only in 2010, workers should have a share in the profits.”

“We have asked for Rs 60,000 per worker, which is only an increase of Rs 1,000 per worker per month since the total amount is for a five-year period,” they said.

Cement prices have increased by around Rs 600 per tonne since January this year.
