Sceptical about price index

Shippers are voicing scepticism over the utility of proposed liners’ rate index, according to a poll conducted by shippersvoice.com. Most shippers entering into rate negotiations with shipping lines would not trust a price index to be based on data supplied by carriers, the survey observes. The survey is believed to be a response to a proposal to the European Commission from the shipping liner lobby, the European Liner Affairs Association, to prepare a price index t hat would replace the conference system to be banned in the EU next October. The proposed information exchange has been criticised as anti-competitive by the European Forwards’ Association and the European Shippers Council.
