Shipping SCI goes overboard!
SCI is going all out to increase tonnage.
A few days ago, on receipt of Union Government approvals, the Shipping Corporation of India placed orders with STX of South Korea for six Handymax vessels of 57,000 dwt capacity each. With this, the number of vessels ordered by the SCI in the past three years with various shipyards rises to 28, totalling 2.3 million dwt and costing Rs 6500 crore and covering tankers, bulk carriers, container ships and anchor-handling tugs. Never before has the state-owned shipping compan y placed orders for so many vessels within such a short time. If the SCI has its way, inquiries reveals, orders for another 50-odd vessels, of all types, will be placed by 2011, of course subject to government approvals. Right now, SCI’s total tonnage is around 4.8 million dwt. The plan is to achieve a total tonnage of eight million dwt net of scrapping by 2011. During the period, an estimated one million dwt may have to be scrapped. OUR BUREAU More Stories on : Shipping | Shipping Corporation of India Ltd
