Skill upgrades

This refers to the editorial “Banking on performance” (Business Line, December 8), which rightly suggests that unions must use their clout to introduce skill upgrades for appropriate employees and voluntary retirement scheme for the “rest” in public sector banks.

Still, 25-30 per cent of the clerks and officers in public sector banks are finding it increasingly difficult to grasp new technologies and adapt themselves to the fast-changing environment in the banking industry. Their problems are compounded in the absence of appropriate exit scheme. With such weak-links, the PSBs must take urgent steps to prepare themselves to face the wave of foreign banks.
