Our Bureau Hyderabad, Dec. 9Dr Reddy’s Foundation, promoted by the Chairman of Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, Dr Anji K. Reddy, has initiated a nation-wide debate on the need to build neighbourhood schools, giving all children access to schools that offer quality education. The Foundation, which has already one such neighbourhood school and is in the process of setting up four more, proposes to come up with a network of schools offering child-friendly ambience, in public-private partnership model. The Foundation has started Pudami English Primaries, targeting out-of-school children in the age group of 3-8 years. These primary schools are expected to reach out to 3,000 children in the first year. The Pudami school would take care of the children after they complete Class Three. “By definition, a neighbourhood school belongs to the neighbourhood. It unconditionally welcomes all children from all walks of life in the neighbourhood,” Dr Reddy said. At a brain-storming meet here recently, Dr Shantha Sinha, Chairperson of National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, regretted that present day schooling reflected the class divide in society. “But that is not what schools are meant for. Children should be equal as they come to school,” she said. She felt that the Government should come up with a model neighbourhood school, initiating dialogue with the private sector. The meeting was attended by Prof. Gopal Guru of JNU; Dr Javeed Alam from the expert committee on Equal Opportunities Commission; Mr G.V. Prasad, Chief Executive Officer, Dr Reddy’s; and Mr J.A. Chowdhary, Managing Director of NVIDIA Graphics. More Stories on : Education | Andhra Pradesh | Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Ltd
