Maize prices remain firm despite good arrivals

Coimbatore, Dec 9 Maize prices in domestic market moved up marginally this week and they were quoted at Rs 6,800 per tonne, up by about 1.5 per cent over last week.

Pushed by strong demand from poultry sector whose maize consumption needs are expected to be in the range of 8.21 million tonnes during 2008-09 season, the maize price is not anticipated to go down drastically, according to the US Grain Council India report.

The report said the average prices of maize ruled lower in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra, the major production centres which have reportedly receiving good arrivals of new crop.

The maize price quote at commodity board of trade of the US for December futures, was up this week at $157.27 per tonne, from last week’s quote of $151.32. The quote for March 2008 futures closed still higher at $164.26 from last week’s quote of $158.02 . The f.o.b. rates too moved up and were indicated at $194-195 per tonne for Dec, 2007-Feb 2008 period.
