5.8 m new GSM users in November


Bharti Airtel continued its dominant position followed by Vodafone Essar and BSNL.

New Delhi, Dec. 10 GSM mobile operators added 5.8 million new subscribers in November taking the total user base to 165.8 million. Through this 3.64 per cent growth on the 160 million in October 2007, operators had added about 6 million new users last month.

According to the statistics released by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), of the four metros, Chennai recorded the highest growth rate.

The subscriber base in Chennai grew by 3.87 per cent in November when compared with that at the end of October with the addition of about 1.8 lakh subscribers.

In Delhi, the subscriber base grew by 2.6 per cent, while the growth was 2.8 per cent and 2.5 per cent for Kolkata and Mumbai, respectively, the COAI report said.

In terms of market share, Bharti Airtel continued its dominant position with 31.94 per cent share followed by Vodafone Essar (23.25 per cent) and BSNL (19.26 per cent).

Bharti added over 2 million new subscribers in November, while Vodafone got 1.37 million. State-owned BSNL showed a much improved performance with 9 lakh new subscribers.
