Transport projects ‘biggest recipient’ of ADB loans

K.R. Srivats

New Delhi, Dec. 12

Asian Development Bank (ADB) expects transport projects to remain as the largest recipient of loan amounts in India during 2008-10, the period for which it has drawn a country operations business plan.

“Transport projects will remain the biggest recipient of loan amounts during 2008-10. It is one of the major sectors for us,” a visiting senior official from the Manila-based regional development bank said at a meeting organised jointly by ADB, FIEO and Exim Bank here.

Business plan

As per ADB’s country operations business plan (COBP) for India during 2008-10, transport projects would account for 36 per cent, energy projects 26 per cent, urban sector (including tourism) 16 per cent, governance and finance related projects for 11 per cent.

Lending programme

A total of 31 firm loans have been programmed over the next three years – 10 loans in 2008, 10 loans in 2009 and 11 loans in 2010.

The three-year lending programme amounts to $2.9 billion in 2008, $3.1 billion in 2009 and $3.2 billion in 2010 or an average of $3 billion over the next three years.
