These are produced at a low production cost and are free from diseases such as wart, black scruf and pests such as tuber moth and nematodes (a barometer for phytosanitary standards), which provide a competitive edge in the international market. The country, with an annual production of 24 million tonnes, contributes about eight per cent to the total world potato output.
