Disese free: Potato sales in progress at Kochi vegetable market in Kerala. These are produced at a low production cost and are free from diseases such as wart, black scruf and pests such as tuber moth and nematodes (a barometer for phytosanitary standards), which provide a competitive edge in the international market. The country, with an annual production of 24 million tonnes, contributes about eight per cent to the total world potato output. Its share in world’s export is 0.52 per cent and ranks third in production after China and Russia.
