Hospitality training institute

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec. 14 UEI Global, a hospitality education venture of the New York-based Berggruen Holdings, has opened a training institute in Thiruvananthapuram.

The institute in Thiruvananthapuram is the company’s third and the first in South India, said Mr Ashish Kesharwani, Head-Hospitality, UEI Global. Besides the centre in Thiruvananthapuram, the company currently has training centres in New Delhi and Noida. By March 2008, it plans to have 22 training centres across the country. And by 2010 the company plans to have 50 training institutes in India, he added.

Courses

Each training centre will offer several one-year courses in hospitality management and food production. While the courses are targeted at young people looking to enter the hospitality industry, they are suitable for anyone looking for a frontline job in the service sector.

The training programmes offered by UEI Global have been developed under the supervision of the Netherlands-based Hotelschool The Hague, he said.

While some merit-based scholarships will be offered, the company has also tied-up with HDFC Bank for student loans, Mr Kesharwani said.

Placements

It is also looking at alliances with hotels to ensure placements for its students. Some students are likely to find jobs in the ‘Keys’ hotel chain being set up by group company Berggruen Hotels, he pointed out. Thiruvananthapuram alone will have three ‘Key’s hotels, one in the city and two in nearby Kovalam, he added.

This month, the company will also open a centre in Pune. Also on the cards are training centres in cities such as Agra, Chandigarh, Mumbai, Lucknow and Bangalore.

Meanwhile, the company is also setting up a hospitality and tourism training institute in Jaipur. This venture, which will be implemented in association with Hotelschool The Hague and SMS Investments, is likely to start operations by March next year.
