Railways Howrah Division poised for growth
The Howrah Division of Eastern Railway, which started handling coal traffic on regular basis only from 2006-07, is now poised to achieve significant growth in throughput. The throughput, which was around one million tonne (mt) in 2006-07, is likely to rise to more than three mt during the current fiscal. Last December, the average daily loading of coal wagons (in terms of four wheelers) was around 200; the figure this year has already touched close to 500. At this rate, th e total throughput might touch the level of 3.5 mt by March 2008, it is felt. Interestingly, the entire coal is being despatched to Punjab, particularly to thermal power stations located at Ropar, Bhatinda and other places. Punjab Emta, a joint venture between Punjab State Electricity Board and West Bengal-based Emta Group responsible for the mining of coal in Pakur in Rajmahal area in Bihar, is believed to have indicated to the Eastern Railway to step up its despatch to seven to eight million tonnes annually within the next few years.
