Supply Chain Management Drop in US container ports’ traffic The traffic at major US container ports dropped below last year’s level for the fourth month in row to November and the trend is believed to be due to the weakness of the US economy, says Shipping Gazette quoting port tracker report released by National Retail federation and Global Insight. The port surveyed included Houston, Savannah, Charleston, Los Angeles/Long Beach, Oakland, Tacoma, Seattle, New York/New Jersey and Hampton Roads. These ports together handled 1.46 million TEUs in October, down 1.3 per cent from September’s 1.48 million TEUs and 3.5 per cent from 1.51 million TEUs in October 2006. The November figure is estimated at 1.36 million TEUs, down 3.5 per cent from a year ago. August was down 1.4 per cent and September was down 1.9 per cent year-on-year. The retailers brace for a slower Christmas and therefore manage their inventories carefully to avoid unplanned discounts, the report adds.
