Bio-remediation for effluent treatment

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam, Dec. 18 Prof. K.M. Elizabeth of the Department of Microbiology in Gitam University here has succeeded in ammonia removal from industrial effluents through a bio-remediation method and has obtained a patent for the method, which will be of use in steel industry in particular, according to a press release issued by the university.

According to the release, bio-remediation is “a recent, eco-friendly technique which employs micro-organisms for removal of toxic elements, such as ammonia, from industrial effluents before discharging them into the environment.

Prof Elizabeth has found a strain of bacterium which can remove ammonia from synthetic solutions and industrial effluents. The bacterium has also the potential to remove nickel.”

As Visakhapatnam is an industrial city, with several industries discharging the effluents into the Bay of Bengal after subjecting them to chemical treatment, the bio-remediation method is recommended, as it is more eco-friendly and superior, adds the release.

The bacterium identified by Prof. Elizabeth can remove 100 per cent ammonia within 24 hours, according to Nessler’s method, and 75 per cent according to the Russian method of Nesselerisation.
