Plea to study groundwater contamination
Our Bureau
Coimbatore, Dec. 18 A group meet on mapping the ‘nitrate contamination in soil and water in heavily fertilised districts’ held in the Tamilnadu Agricultural University (TNAU) here has called for undertaking study to ascertain whether the nitrate contamination in groundwater of selected districts is due to heavy use of fertilisers or due to other reasons.
According to Dr S. Natarajan, Director, Centre for Soil and Crop Management Studies, TNAU, there is a need on the part of agricultural scientists to explore whether this contamination was due to heavy fertilisation or due to the industrial pollution.
Areas suggested
He suggested these studies be held in areas such as Cumbum, the Cauvery delta and the Tamirapari river belt areas of Tamil Nadu which witnessed intensive cultivation and heavy fertilisation.
Dr Biswapati Mandal, Principal Investigator, West Bengal centre, participating at the meet said a clear understanding on whether the nitrate pollution occurred due to inorganic fertilisation alone or it was due to organic farming as well should be established.
