Thiruvananthapuram, Dec. 18 The Kerala Cabinet has approved the annual Plan for 2008-09, with an outlay of Rs 7,605 crore, as drafted by the State Planning Board.

The Planning Board, which met last week, had decided to increase the outlay for the year by Rs 655 crore over the current year’s Rs 6,950 crore. The focus areas of the Plan will be agriculture, industry, traditional industries, information technology and tourism.

The Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, told newspersons after the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday that he would hold discussions with the Planning Commission to finalise the annual Plan during his visit to Delhi to attend the National Development Council meeting.

Insurance scheme

The Cabinet also approved an insurance scheme for farmers in the State as recommended by the Agriculture Department. The details of the scheme would be worked out soon, the Chief Minister said.

Another decision taken by the Cabinet pertains to supply of 3kg of rice to school children under the noon-meal scheme.

This is conceived as a new-year gift to the children from the Government.

As part of the efforts to improve the medical facilities for pilgrims to the Sabarimala temple, the Cabinet approved the setting up of a medical centre there as suggested by a high-level committee of officials.

The centre will feature a mini operation theatre, apart from other facilities.
