Plea to allow multiple radio frequencies per city

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Dec. 20

Radio is one of the fastest growing sectors within the media and entertainment industry, growing at 28 per cent compared to an overall industry growth of 18 per cent.

However, the need for more frequencies in all markets and for multiple licences per city per broadcaster, is spoiling the fun, says the industry.

According to FICCI Radio Forum allowing only a single frequency per city is forcing broadcasters to offer content similar to that of their competitors. Growth in listenership has only come from growth in geographical coverage of networks, it points out. While the number of FM radio channels has grown from 10 to more than 200, the penetration of radio or percentage of listeners per population, has only risen from 45 to 53 per cent during the same period says FICCI. India being a multi-linguistic country the need for this is even greater, FICCI said.
