Electrical Goods States - Tamil Nadu Power Ministry to promote energy efficient appliances
Our Bureau Coimbatore, Dec. 21 The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) of the Ministry of Power will encourage manufacturers of electrical appliances to improve energy efficiency at the manufacturing stage, according to Mr Jiwesh Nandan, National Coordinator, BEE. Speaking at the two-day national conference on pumps being organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Coimbatore Zone, in association with the Indian Pump Manufactures Association (IPMA) and the Southern India Engineering Manufacturers’ Association (Siema) today, he said the BEE and the Power Ministry were working closely with the State governments to bring in new schemes for saving energy, particularly in the agricultural sector. With the energy costs going up and pressures of global warming, it was necessary for the industry to initiate steps to reduce energy consumption. BEE has been interacting with the manufacturers and industry associations and helping the manufacturers develop and decide on their own regarding design, processes and procedures and enforcement mechanisms. The emphasis would be on voluntary compliance and self regulation. Testing protocolsHe said the role of BEE was to assist manufacturers to develop testing procedures and protocols for determining energy performance, fixing of standards etc and it would also encourage manufacturers to improve the energy efficiency of equipment and appliances in the manufacturing stage. Mr Ravindra Pal Bhatia, Managing Director, Mather & Platt Pumps Ltd, said the global demand for pumps was growing annually by 5 per cent and there was great need to conserve energy. He called upon the industry to invest in R&D and bring in innovation in manufacturing process. Mr Jayakumar Ramdass, event Chairman, stated that India produced pumps worth Rs 3,750 crore and this was expected to grow at the rate of 6 per cent in the next two years. With more business opportunities opening up for the pump industry, it was necessary for Coimbatore pump industry to take steps to capture a share of the emerging business opportunities. Mr V. Krishnakumar, President, IPMA, said India catered to a mere 3.2 per cent of the world pump market and it should focus on innovation and use new raw materials and coatings, information technology and spare parts support to compete in today’s market.
