Telecommunications Marketing - Market Shares Corporate - Outlook LG eyes 7-8% market share in GSM segment

Our Bureau New Delhi, Dec. 24 LG Electronics, which aims to be among the top three players in the mobile handset market in India, has decided to increase its focus on premium products in the GSM-based cell phones. The Korean consumer durables major, which launched its high-end phone LG Viewty priced at Rs 21,900, hopes to garner a market share of seven to eight per cent by next year. At present, the company has a market share of 1.6 per cent in the GSM handset market. Nokia is the market leader in the segment, followed by Samsung and Motorola. Bollywood actor Deepika Padukone has been roped in as the brand ambassador. Shifting focus“LG Viewty has sold over 3.1 lakh units globally since its launch five weeks back. The high-end phone’s launch in India is in line with LG’s strategy to be present not just in the low and medium end categories but also in the premium range,” Mr V. Ramachandran, Director-Sales and Marketing, LG Electronics, said. The company, which has a significant presence in the CDMA mobile phone market, is now shifting its focus towards the GSM space. It plans to launch 32 new models next year. Mr Ramachandran said the company will scale up its product introductions to suit customer’s needs. LG currently makes colour phones in the sub-Rs 14,000 price range. CDMA marketOn whether LG is exiting the CDMA segment completely, he said: “we have a strong position in this market. Going forward, we will consolidate our position here. We will be looking towards GSM space for further growth.” The company has tied up with 5,000 odd retailers to sell its new range.
