Education States - Other States ‘Gain knowledge to enrich mind’ Our Bureau Ranchi, Dec. 24 Despite the fact that we are living in a materialistic world, human life needs emotions, logic and a “sense of reasoning” to survive and flourish. This was stated here by Prof Sudeep Ghosh, Executive Director, Indian Institute of Coal Management, Ranchi, at the ICFAI auditorium, in a lecture organised under the aegis of the Business Line Club. The topic of the lecture was ‘Living in the Modern World’. Prof Ghosh urged students to gain knowledge that would enrich the mind because once the mind is geared in the right direction, the meaning of life would take on a positive hue. He also said that everybody should make reading newspaper a habit for at least half an hour every day chasing materialismHe cautioned against blindly chasing materialism or Western consumerism because it was already leading to dissatisfaction, tension and melancholy, due to which the number of suicides all over the world was increasing. Prof Ghosh said that, according to the Japanese Health Ministry, 44 per cent of Japanese executives aged 42 and above were suffering from mental disorder. As much as 54 per cent of youth deaths in the US, Japan and Sweden were due to suicide. Dr Kaushik Dutta, the head of ICFAI, Ranchi, called upon students to lead a disciplined life and not to focus on past laurels so that they could concentrate on “making things happen”.
