Coir Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports 20.47% rise in coir exports
Our Bureau Kochi, Dec. 25 Coir exports have increased sharply during April-November of the current fiscal, despite rupee appreciation denting the shipments a bit. Exports of coir products increased 20.47 per cent to 1,18,158 tonnes. However, in rupee terms the export up to November was higher by only 2.5 per cent compared with the same period a year ago. The export value is Rs 387.11 crore. Mr A.C. Jose, Board Chairman, said the 12.5 per cent appreciation in rupee against the dollar impacted coir exports. During the same period last year, 98,079 tonnes valued at Rs 377.65 crore were exported. Had rupee appreciation not dented the exports, the value realisation would have gone up by another Rs 68.27 crore, he said. Coir and its products are exported to more than 97 countries the world over. The US is the single largest market with a share of over 40 per cent. European countries together make up another 41 per cent of the exports. Coir is exported in the form of raw materials like fibre, yarn, curled coir etc. They are also exported as furnishing articles like door mats, matting, rugs, carpets, coir rope and rubberised coir and its products, pith-based products for agricultural operations, and soil erosion control materials — coir geo-textiles. Over the year, the Coir Board has participated in various international trade fairs and exhibitions, and displayed a range of products available for export. Recently, the Export Market Development Assistance Scheme of the Coir Board was modified to encourage small scale exporters, with a turnover of less than Rs 2 crore to undertake promotional measures like participation in exhibition, study tour, buyer seller meet etc. More Stories on : Coir | Exports & Imports
