TN industry told to gear up for power shortage

Chennai, Dec. 26 The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) has suggested to industry to gear up to face power shortage. During the peak hours, there is a shortage of 1,000 MW in the State.

In a recent meeting with industry, TNEB asked it to help by working on Sundays and shift the weekly holiday to some other day, and to work more during the night hours. It also asked the sugar industry to see if it could help by producing more from its co-generation units and feed into the grid, industry sources said.

Some sections of industry are unaffected, or relatively less affected by the power shortage. Some companies, such as Chemplast Sanmar Ltd, are fully self-reliant with their own captive generating capacities and are not affected. Sugar companies are also self-reliant, as they derive energy from bagasse. Those sugar units that have co-generation plants do, in fact, supply to the grid. Some other units, which have signed MoUs with the TNEB for regular supply of power, such as Hyundai, are also not affected.

But those who are hit by the shortfall have responded to TNEB’s call. Sources in the TVS Group have said that many companies of the group have shifted their weekly holiday to Monday.
