Amul milk procurement crosses 100 lakh kg per day

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Dec. 28 The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd (GCMMF or ‘Amul’) has crossed a landmark, with its member unions procuring 100.2 lakh kg per day (LKPD) of milk on December 27.

This is the first time that the 13 district unions affiliated to the Rs 4,232.81-crore (net sales) federation — which is an apex marketing body — have procured more than 100 lakh kg on a single day.

Milk production peaks during the ‘flush’ winter months, while dipping in the ‘lean’ summer period. “During the current fiscal, our average procurement would be around 75 LKPD, compared to the 67.25 LKPD for 2006-07. The average price paid by our unions to farmers, too, would be higher at about Rs 280 per kg of fat (Rs 17.3 for a litre of full-cream milk with six per cent fat and taking 1.03 kg for every litre), compared to last year’s Rs 200 per kg,” a GCMMF official said.

Benefit to farmer

The highest ever procurement recorded during 2006-07 was 89 LKPD achieved on January 15, 2007. “Our 27 lakh farmer members have poured more milk and also received prices this time. They have, thus, derived a twin benefit,” the official added.

To view things in perspective, GCMMF’s average procurement of 67.25 LKPD for 2006-07 was much more than the corresponding 10-12 LKPD for leading private dairy companies such as Nestle India and Hatsun Agro Product.

In fact, the Mehsana district union alone is currently handling 23 LKPD, with these being 21 LKPD for Banaskantha, 14.5 LKPD for Kaira, and 13.5 LKPD for Sabarkantha. Even the Surendranagar milk union, which became a member of GCMMF only two years back, is today procuring three LKPD now, the official stated.

GCMMF’s 13 district unions source milk from 27 lakh farmers spread across 13,000 villages of Gujarat.
