E&Y submits report to Ministry

Ernst & Young, which was appointed to advise on the formation of a mega alliance in dredging with participation of several port trusts and the public sector shipping giant, has since submitted its report to the Union Shipping Ministry. The Ministry has made some observations on the report. The consultant, it is learnt, is now trying to modify its report based on the observations made. While the dredging requirement of both ports and various waterways in the country is steadily rising, there are not too may domestic dredging firms active in the field. Internationally also, the dredging expertise is concentrated in a few hands, mostly Dutch and Belgian firms (though Chinese and Japanese too are gradually emerging on the scene). In other words, the facilities available are inadequate to the meet the burgeoning demand. No wonder, the foreign dredging majors try to make the best out of the situation, something not to the liking of the Government.
