Expert views sought on bridge

Experts in bridge building, structural engineering and civil construction — both from within the Railways and outside, some from IITs and RoorkeeUniversity — recently assembled in Bhagalpur (Bihar) to work out a probable solution to one of the most unique problems being faced by the Eastern Railway in its Bhagalpur-Sahibgunge section under its Malda Division. A 90-year old rail bridge over a small river is slowly going down. Though there is no structural defect in the bridge, the earth and sand underneath are subsiding. Initial attempts by the Railway engineers to stop subsidence has not yield results and experts view is being sought. Top Railway officials have visited the spot. Inquiries revealed that early resumption of services is not possible.
