Vietnam gets container plant

Vietnam’s first container manufacturing plant was commissioned recently. It is the second biggest of its kind in Southeast Asia, claims official Vietnam News Service. The plant, a joint venture between Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry group and Toong Goen Enterprise and located in the Northern province of Hai Duong, will have annual capacity of 45,000 TEUs initially, to be stepped up to 2 lakh TEUs annually by 2010. Though the country’s containerised trade has grown by 50 per cent to $1 billion in the past one year, the foreign shipping companies have been supplying the boxes. Manufacturing containers within the country is expected to bring down the cost of containers and improve the competitiveness its exports.
