Keltec formally handed over to BrahMos Aerospace

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec. 31 The State Government-owned Kerala Hitech Industries Ltd (Keltec) was today formally handed over to BrahMos Aerospace.

Speaking on the occasion, the Union Defence Minister, Mr A. K. Antony, said that BrahMos Aerospace Thiruvananthapuram Ltd has thus become Kerala’s first defence production unit. The unit in Thiruvananthapuram will assemble the BrahMos missile system, one of the world’s best missile systems, he pointed out. If all stakeholders including the government, political parties and trade unions work together, Kerala will be able to draw more investments in the defence sector, he declared

Earlier, while addressing the gathering the Kerala Chief Minister, Mr V. S. Achuthanandan, said that the takeover of Keltec by BrahMos Aerospace will hopefully mark the beginning of a new phase in Kerala’s development. This venture alone should attract investments of over Rs 1,000 crore over the next few years, he said. He expressed the hope that the Defence Ministry would be inspired by the takeover of Keltec to make more investments in Kerala.

The Kerala Industries Minister, Mr Elamaram Kareem, who also addressed the gathering, said that the State Government is in the process of reviving several State public sector enterprises through tie-ups with Central public sector enterprises. He said that the Industries Department’s proposal to revive the Trivandrum Spinning Mills has been approved and will soon be implemented.

According to Dr A. Sivathanu Pillai, MD and CEO, BrahMos Aerospace, the company’s Thiruvananthapuram facility will be used to assemble Brahmos missiles and will also continue to manufacture components for the Indian Space research Organisation. The new assembly line for missiles will be ready within three years, he added.
