Science congress begins in Vizag tomorrow

Prime Minister will inaugurate the meet


The focal theme of the meet would be developing a knowledge-based society using environmentally sustainable science and technology.

Visakhapatnam, Jan. 1 The 95th Indian Science Congress begins in Andhra University on Thursday. The meet will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh.

At a press meet in the university on Tuesday, Dr Ramamurthi Rallapalli, President of the Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA), said the focal theme of the congress would be developing a knowledge-based society using environmentally sustainable science and technology. There would be plenary sessions, panel discussions, public lectures and sectional seminars. Three Nobel laureates will deliver lectures at the congress, he said.

Sustainable green revolution, nano science and technology, space technology for knowledge dissemination, renewable energy sources, environmental remediation, water mission, climate shift, oceans as a resource for future, pharma sciences, bio-ethics, telemedicine, biotechnology, and remote sensing in the Indian context will be some of the themes to be covered in the congress.

He said about 8,000 delegates from different parts of the country and abroad would participate in the congress.

It was the second time the university was holding the science congress.

The first time, in 1976, it was held in the university and the then Prime Minister, Ms. Indira Gandhi, had inaugurated the congress.

Dr M.S Swaminathan, agricultural scientist, was the President of the ISCA then.

In this congress too, Dr Swaminathan would participate and deliver a lecture.

The congress would conclude on January 7.TT
