The host university

Andhra University, hosting the Science Congress, is one of the oldest in the country, established in 1926 by Dr Cattamanchi Ramalinga Reddy, eminent educationist and first Vice-chancellor. In fact, the university was originally set up in Vijayawada, but Dr Reddy found the heat unbearable and named the town “Blazewada”.

He found the cooler climes of Visakhapatnam more congenial and, on his recommendation, it was shifted here. He thus took the first and the most significant step in the growth of Visakhapatnam. At that time, Vizag was no more than a fishing village and even the port had not been established.

To begin with, it was housed in a building called Hotel Cecil with an adjoining area of 53 acres around it. The university started with only four departments, six teachers and hardly 20 scholars. “It took years of dedicated work by many great scholars to develop this university into one of the finest in the country,” says Dr L. Venugopala Reddy, Vice-Chancellor.

The second Vice-Chancellor of the university, Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, went on to become the President of the Indian Union subsequently. The two great academics – Dr C.R Reddy and Dr S. Radhakrishnan – built up the reputation of the university, setting the highest standards in teaching and academic excellence.

The university now consists of the main campus at Visakhapatnam and five university colleges and four extension campuses. Apart from these campuses, there are 541 affiliated colleges (both Government-run and private ones) in the five coastal districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari and West Godavari.

It offers 54 courses in science and technology and is planning to introduce many more, according to Dr Venugopala Reddy.
