Maruti, Hyundai, GM power ahead in sales

Two-wheelers continue to slump in December

New Delhi, Jan. 2 The automobile industry ended 2007 with a mixed bag with some passenger car companies such as Maruti and General Motors reporting a surge in sales and two wheeler companies continuing to witness falling volumes.

Maruti Suzuki India reported a 6.9 per cent increase in sales during December in the domestic market at 58,401 units. Led by bouyant sales of SX4, the company’s A3 segment grew the fastest at 54.7 per cent at 3,291 units. It was followed by the C segment with models such as Omni and Versa that grew at 23.2 per cent (8,034 units). Volumes remained the highest in the A2 segment comprising Alto, Wagon R, Zen and Swift at 39,575 units, recording a growth of 2.9 per cent. Exports grew at a robust pace of 75.4 per cent at 4114 units.

Next in the fray stood Hyundai Motors India that bounced back after the launch of i10. Its sales shot 18.17 per cent to 13,078 units. However, exports at 11,586 units during the month registered a marginal decline of 5.7 per cent from 12,288 units in the previous year.


“The auto industry till November has been growing on an average of about 14 per cent. Last month, however, it grew by 8 per cent as compared to the corresponding month last year. But in terms of month-on-month, December saw a decline in sales,” said Mr N R Narayanan, Group Business Head, Vehicle Loans, ICICI Bank. In the two wheelers segment, during December Hero Honda reported a sales decline of 4.72-per cent at 240,532 units from 252,462 units, while its rival Bajaj saw its sales dipping 6 per cent at 1,76,441 units.

However, in the case of Bajaj, of the total sales of 1,99, 470 units including two and three wheelers, exports contributed to 50, 702 units, 29 per cent up from 39,385 units last year.
