Concor posts 29% growth in eastern region

Kolkata, Jan. 3

Riding high on improved turnaround time and increased volumes of Nepal’s imports routed through the Kolkata port, Container Corporation of India (Concor) in eastern region posted 29 per cent growth in throughput on the Kolkata port-Birganj ICD (inland container depot) sector in first nine months of the current fiscal as compared to the same period of the last year.

During the period, the throughput on the route was 10,720 TEUs as compared to 8,308 TEUs in the same period of last year. “We have deployed BLC (closed circuit) rakes on the routes with the result, the turnaround time has improved from earlier nine /10 to six/seven days at present”, observe Concor sources, pointing that the throughput on the route in the whole of last year (2006-07) was 10,722 TEUs, or almost the same as what has been achieved so far in the current year.

The sources further point out that Concor now accounts for 1,300/1,400 TEUs out of a total 1,700 TEUs of Nepal’s imports passed through Raxaul border (north Bihar) every month. Nepal’s total containerised imports through Kolkata port, it is estimated, will be about 2,700 TEUs every month. Raxaul is one border point but there are a few other border points through which the imports also pass. Concor’s services are restricted to Birganj close to Raxaul.

According to Kolkata Port Trust sources, the growth of Nepal’s imports through the port has been around 10 per cent.

However, the growth of Concor’s overall exim (export-import) traffic in the region during the period has not been as spectacular at a little more than 11 per cent, -- 19,138 TEUs (17,189 TEUs).

This is because the throughput on the other exim route between Amingaon (Guwahati) ICD and Kolkata port has been less than satisfactory.
