Dairy & Dairy Products States - Karnataka Focus on dairy farming in Uttara Kannada A.J. Vinayak Mangalore, Jan. 3 Enthused by the response to the kisan melas (farmers’ conventions) in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, the Dakshina Kannada-based non-governmental organisation — Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) — will organise the 27th edition of Kisan Mela at Sirsi in Uttara Kannada district. The focus of this year’s mela, to be held between January 9 and 11, will be on expanding dairy farming in Uttara Kannada district. Dr L.H. Manjunath, Executive Director of SKDRDP, told Business Line that there is good scope for expanding dairy farming in Uttara Kannada district. But the network of milk procurement and production needs to be improved in this regard. Though Uttara Kannada district comprises around 75,000 farmers with small and marginal holdings, the total milk production stands at 30,000 litres a day.
