Cotton lint prices stay firm

Our Bureau

Coimbatore, Jan. 3 Cotton lint prices continued to remain firm during the current fortnight. While cotton exports to countries, including China and Pakistan, has enabled a firm price trend, the off-take by the domestic mill sector remained insignificant compared to the market arrivals.

According to South India Cotton Association (SICA), cotton purchases by domestic mills continued to be restrictive in the face of lower yarn offtake, lesser export realisations due to rupee appreciation and prevailing financial crunch.

Export demand

On the other hand, cotton arrivals into the markets are continuing and farmers too, are able to realise the prices for their produce in view of the export demand for cotton.

The Cotton Advisory Board is scheduled to hold its meeting on January 11 to assess the 2007-08 cotton crop scenario.
